Having control and flexibility over not only life but work as well is regarded as an invaluable gift for entrepreneurs. However, the issue is that many freelancers, consultants and business owners find it difficult to define the highest-leverage ways in which they can spend their time.
When working for yourself, you are able to define your job description whenever you would like, this make it possible for it to revolve around what you love and build a business model or in some cases, a career around that. You should think about your work in terms of skills and preferences and then prioritize your products or services so that you are being strategic about how you spend time.
Stop doing things that you are not good at and do not love. This does not mean that you are never going to have to do things that you do not like every once in a while but you can structure your work in a way that your time is best spent in ways that make you happy.
Love / Good at
This is a sweet spot, you should try and find things that you are good at and love doing: you should focus you work there as much as possible. You can build your business model around these things in order to leverage them for the most revenue as possible. These will shit as time progresses and you are able to learn new things and specialize in other skill sets. As this happens you will see your business model evolve accordingly.
Love / Bad at
Sometimes what you love but are not good at can be the same. However, it is entirely possible to learn new skills that you love but are not yet proficient at, it will just take a bit more time. The fact that it is something new and challenging, would make you love them even more. All you have to do is think about prioritizing these things strategically in order to continue doing them whilst not letting consume all your time and energy. As you get better at them, you can move them into the love/good at section and can become a more prominent part of your business model.
Hate / Good at
This is a tricky area as it is often these things that can bring in a major chunk of revenue. Varying on where your business model stands and in what stage your life/career is in, it would make sense to still have these play a big role in your work as a stepping stone to where you would like to go. However, if you do not need to do these things, you can gradually phase them out in a strategic manner or just train someone else to do them for you so that you can focus on the things you love doing.
Hate / Bad at
These are the things you should either get limit or get rid of completely as soon as possible. Even if you have clients who would be willing and able to pay for them, it makes no sense if you cannot deliver quality and all it does is consume time and takes away from what you would like to be focusing on. It is alright to do this sometimes if you have a client or project that requires something that falls into this area, though you need to try and organize your workflow and business so that you will be limiting this form of work as much as you can.
Finally, it is important that you keep in mind that you did not go on your own to spend a large number of hours to do things that you hate. You had made a conscious decision for your work to serve your life. Having said that, leverage your skill set and build a life you would like for yourself.
